Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT has been shown to be effective for a range of mental disorders and difficulties. It was developed by Dr. Aaron T. Beck and is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist and the patient work together as a team to identify and solve problems. In individual psychotherapy for adults, CBT is used to help you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviors.
How does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) work?
CBT focuses on identifying and correcting negative or dysfunctional thoughts (cognitions) that lead to emotional distress and dysfunctional behaviors. Through the therapy process, you will learn to recognize thought patterns and challenge them, replacing them with more realistic and functional thoughts. At the same time, you will develop strategies to change behaviors that reinforce the problems you are experiencing. The therapy is based on a collaborative approach, where we work together to define your goals and develop practical tools to achieve them. The CBT process usually includes exercises and self-help techniques and at-home sessions. Through CBT, you will learn how to cope with stress, manage difficult life situations with more calmness, and reframe your thoughts and behavior in more functional directions.
How is CBT different from other approaches?
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is different from other psychotherapeutic approaches, as it focuses mainly on the person’s current difficulties and their behavioral reactions to the present. The duration of the therapy is usually limited, aiming to immediately resolve specific problems, while the patients are encouraged to acquire skills that can be applied throughout their lives. These skills are developed through the identification and correction of cognitive distortions, the modification of deeper beliefs or “schemas”, and the adaptation of behavioral patterns of interaction with their environment.
